What Is Panchkarma Treatment ?

Panchakarma Treatment is a method of cleansing the body of all the unwanted waste after lubricating it. Panchakarma are 5 (five) in number; hence the term PANCHA (five) – KARMA (procedures). Panchakarma treatment is unique in the sense that it includes preventive, curative and promotive actions for various diseases.

Five Panchakarma therapies are

  • Vamana (Emesis),
  • Virechana (Therapeutic purgation)
  • Basti (Enema)
  • Nasyam (Nasal medication)
  • Raktamokshana (Blood letting)

Vaman employs administration of certain emetic medicinal decotion that induce vomiting to clean the upper gut, lungs, chest and stomach. The procedure is best suited for diseases related to kapha dosha. E.g Bronchial asthma. When there is conjestion in the lungs causing repeated attacks of bronchitis, colds, cough or asthma, the Ayurvedic treatment is therapeutic vomiting, vamana, to eliminate the kapha causing the excess mucus. Often times this also releases repressed emotions that have been held in the kapha areas of the lungs and stomach along with the accumulated dosha. Once the mucus is released, the patient will feel instantly relieved.

Virechana concentrates on the lower part of the gut and uses purgatives medicine to clean the bowel. When excess pitta (acid) is secreted and accumulated in the gall bladder, liver, small intestine. It helps root out fever, diabetes, skin disorders, joint disorders, digestive disorders, constipation, hyperacidity, vitiligo, psoriasis, and headaches. Purgatives help relieve the excess pitta causing the bile disturbance in the body. In fact, purgatives can completely cure the problem of excess pitta. When purgatives are used, the patient should not eat foods that will aggravate the predominant dosha or cause the three dosha to become unbalanced.

Basti is considered as the mother of all Panchakarma treatments as it cleanses the accumulated toxins from all the 3 doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, through the colon. Medicated oil or ghee and herbal decoction are given as enema to clean the colon and improve peristalsis. It is beneficial in conditions like colitis, convalescence, cervical spondylosis, irritable bowel syndrome constipation, digestive disorders, backache & sciatica, obesity, piles, and infertility.

The nose is the doorway to the brain and it is also the doorway to consciousness. The nasal administration of medication is called nasya. An excess of bodily humors accumulated in the sinus, throat, nose or head areas is eliminated by means of the nearest possible opening, the nose. Nasya involves administration of medicated oil through the nose to cleanse the accumulated kapha toxins from the head and neck region. It benefits in diseases above the collarbone and sinus.

Raktamokshana is procedure of blood cleansing and is advised in very rare conditions. It is not a part of the general Panchakarma. It is a therapy advocated by Ayurveda for curing conditions like varicose veins. Diet is increased gradually in the first seven day after panchkarma therapy. The diet first is liquid, followed by semi solid and then solid.

Stages Of Panchkarma Treatment

Panchakarma is performed in three stages that methodically lead the body through a variety of therapies - Preparation phase (Porva karma) , Main procedures (Pradhana karma), Post-therapy procedures (paschat karma)
  • Purvakarma is derived from the words Purva (Foremost) and Karma (Action). It is the first set of actions that are taken ahead of a Panchakarma therapy, and lasts for three to seven days. At this stage the body is prepared for treatment by loosening toxins and excessdoshas. The first stage is Purvakarma, where oleation therapy, Body massage and steam bath is given for the client because intense sweating loosen excess doshas and toxins accumulated in the body
  • In the actual treatment, Pradhanakarma(Second stage) a specialized treatment is administered to expel impurities, and revitalize the system.
  • The final stage is Paschatkarma where a rehabilitation plan with diet, rest and lifestyle modifications is prescribed to prevent recurrence of the disease. This post-treatment care sets Ayurveda apart from other fields of medicine.

Life Style and Diet Recommendation

During any step of panchakarma therapy, traditional Ayurveda recommends certain lifestyle and diet guidelines. It is advised to get plenty of rest during the panchakarma experience and to avoid strenuous exercise, sexual activity, late nights, loud music, television and other such stimulating experiences. It is also advised to take particular care to keep warm and away from the wind and to observe one’s thoughts and experiences during this time. A mono-diet of khichri and ghee is recommended, as well as essential restrictions on cold drinks, cold food, caffeine, white sugar, recreational drugs or alcohol and dairy products—all substances which should not be resumed (if at all) until sometime after panchakarma is completed. The reason for this diet is that during the cleansing process the digestive fire (agni) takes a rest. Also, as toxins move back into the gastrointestinal tract, the power of digestion is further slowed.
